Hedy Lamarr

Birth/Death: Birth- November 9, 1914, Death- January 19, 2000

Major Academic Events: Hedy Lamarr did not have any special academic experiences because she was first seen for her looks and became an actress, closing the door on her beautifully bright scientific mind.

Contributions to Computer Science: Hedy Lamarr invented a communication system with the intention of guiding torpedoes to their target using frequency hopping. Her original invention was later used in the creation of WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

Most Interesting Fact: Lamarr also created a tablet that could dissolve in water creating a soda-like drink similar to Coke.

Hedy Lamarr

Major Academic Events: Mark Dean has his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from University of Tennessee, a masters in electrical engineering from Florida Atlantic University, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford.

Contributions to Computer Science: Mark Dean was a key player in inventing the Personal computer while working for IBM, having held 3 of the IBM's original 9 PC patents. In addition he is known for his more recent creation the 1-Gigahertz chip, which contains 1 million transistors and has nearly limitless potential.

Most Interesting Fact: Mark Dean was the first African American to be honored with IBM's fellowship.

Alan Turing

Birth/Death: Birth-June 23, 1912, Death-June 7, 1954

Major Academic Events: He attended a top private school as a child. He then studied at the University of Cambridge majoring in mathematics. After Cambridge, he attended King's College and studied probability theory.

Contributions to Computer Science: He is known as the father of modern computer science because he created the first computer. This was known as the Turning Machine. This mathematical machine famously used the binary system. This was the first use of binary which led to all modern day computers.
